Department of Community Medicine

Community Medicine largely works to improve the health status of the community. The preventive health and health management has a greater role for a healthy life than clinically based technology. In order to meet these requirements, the future physicians should be, what Boelen calls a “five star doctor” that is: 1. Leader, 2. Care provider, 3.Communicator, 4.Decision maker and 5. Manager

Dept of community medicine works as “A system of delivery of comprehensive health care of the people by a health team in order to improve the health of the community”

The objective of community medicine is to Improve health status of a community, using the Population data, assessing health problems, identifying disease patterns and making availability of health services.

The Department of Community Medicine is one of the oldest department established and commenced functioning at Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal in the Year 1957 and has been a major contributor to the public health scenario in the State and been dedicated in teaching and training and research activities of undergraduates, interns and postgraduates students for more than 50 years. Apart from this, the department also assists with planning and implementation of various public health projects in collaboration with NHM, UNICEF, WHO and ICMR. Pioneering milestones in leprosy control, under the leadership of Dr. Mrs. Claudia Bose have been achieved. Continuing her legacy, current faculty are constantly providing strength to the NTEP in various ways for elimination of Tuberculosis.

The MD Post Graduate Program, initially affiliated to the Barkatullah University, and then affiliated to the Madhya Pradesh Medical Science University and has produced dedicated and skilled public health professionals serving around the country and abroad.  The department provides promotive, preventive and curative services to the community through established rural health training centres at Obedullaganj and Urban Health training centre at Lady Bhore.
