Dept of Dermatology , Venereology and Leprosy , Gandhi Medical College and Hamidia Hosptial , Bhopal is one of the leading department among the various dermatology departments of all the medical colleges and teritiary care hospitals in central india .
It has the credit of managing one of the highest average daily dermatology opd patients in the state. In addition to imparting regular training to 250 under graduate students by lectures , clinical postings and bed side teachings the department is also conducting regular post graduate teachings to its post graduate students .
Over the time , because of the astute clinical sense and patient care given by the team of consultants the department has earned the reputation of being a referral center for all the complicated cases may it be outdoor or indoor patients . Shear dedication , proper guidance , and adherance to strict compliance done by the post graduates of the department under the guidance of the consultants has made the in-patient treatment and care , a favourite for all the difficult to treat cases of Hansen's disease with Lepra Reactions, Immumobullous disorders like Pemphigus Vulgaris and Pemphigus foliaceous and severely debilitating diseases like Erythroderma , Stevens-Johnson syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis .
The department is a nodal centre for treatment of Hansen's disease under the National Leprosy Eradication Program (NLEP ). Facilities of Slit Skin Smear along with acid fast staining is freely available in the department, leading to early detection and treatment of Hansen's disease .
The treatment itself being facilitated by the immediate dispersion of blister packs of Paucibacillary and Multibacillary multi drug therapy from the leprosy center running under the department . STI Clinic ( Sexually transmitted infections ) run by the department in association with NACO and MP Aids Control Society , is equipped with rapid diagnostic kits for HIV AIDS and syphilis , along with provision of STI kits for treatment based on syndromic approach.
The dept is equipped with minor OT / Procedure Room being run simultaneously to conduct various dermatosurgical procedures like Radio frequency ablation , electro and chemical cautery , skin biospy , peels , itra lesionals steroids etc. Regular case presentations , seminars and journal club activities are conducted in the department as a part of post graduate teaching programme . Regular rounds under the supervision of head of the department ensures continuous bed side teachings in the dermatology ward .
The department conducted a national level continuing medical education ( CME ) programme on paediatric dermatolgy on 4th Sept 2022 which was attended with a galaxy of eminant national level speakers from JIPMER Pudducherry , Seth GS Medical college mumbai and AIIMS Bhopal with more than 150 deligates from all over the country
